| This artwork is from the Bronowski series.
The artwork includes the frame, with the overall size 22.5"
x 18.5". The upper left corner is dominated by a larger-than-life
Lenten Rose. A portion of a self-portrait by Rembrandt is above
and somewhat behind the main image, which is The Magic Grammar
from 1902 by Jessie M. King. Art Nouveau designs fill the remainder
of the frame. The following text quoted from Jacob Bronowski's
Accent of Man and is not only set apart in the image as
an area of text, but also is indicated in the book that the woman
is reading:
"Man is distinguished from other animals by his imaginative
gifts.
"He makes plans, inventions, new discoveries, by putting different
talents together; and his discoveries become more subtle and penetrating,
as he learns to combine his talents in more complex and intimate
ways.
So the great discoveries of different ages and different cultures;
in technique, in science, in the arts, express in their progression
a richer and more intricate conjunction of human faculties, an ascending
trellis of his gifts." |
