The entire image including the frame is 16.5" x 13.5".
The main image is of Jan Vermeer's Girl in a Red Hat c. 1660. Wood-burning
dominates the lion-head posts on the chair, and the girl's elbow
extends slightly onto the inner frame, suggesting more depth. The
inner frame is covered with Celtic designs, which fit nicely with
the Art Nouveau designs on the panel itself. The background of strong
orange allows the woodgrain to show through.
The text is a quote by Jacob Bronowski which reads: "In every
age there is a turning-point, a new way of seeing and asserting
the coherence of the world... Each culture tries to fix its visionary
moment, when it was transformed by a new conception either of nature
or of man. But in retrospect, what commands our attention as much
are the continuities -- the thoughts that run or recur from one
civilisation to another." |
