| Mucha’s Door (78" height by 36" width) is dedicated
to the craftspeople who worked on the 2004 addition of art gallery
space to the artist’s home. These artisans designed, built,
and painted the house and landscape structures, and added furnishings
and window treatments linking the original interior space to the
new.
The Door’s main image is borrowed from Alphonse Mucha (c.
1900) and sometimes utilizes and other times ignores the 3-D aspects
of the door itself. The lady is not quite life-size and makes
a dramatic statement when seen from the street. Those who come
closer can also read the dedication, which quotes Jacob Bronowski
as follows:
"The most powerful drive in the ascent of man is his pleasure
in his own skill. He loves to do what he does well and, having
done it well, he loves to do it better…
Monuments are supposed to commemorate kings and religions, heroes,
dogmas, but in the end the man they commemorate is the Builder."
