The overall dimensions of this box are appx. 9.5"
wide by 11" high by 5" deep. The doors open to reveal
additional artwork within (see below). The main image is taken from
a black and white storybook illustration by Howard Pyle from the
late 1800s. The artwork continues around the cabinet to the back
where a mysterious man, dragons and other creatures reside in a
cave (not shown).
The text is a portion of a poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge written
during the early 1800s which reads: "Oft in my waking hours
do I live o'er again that happy hour, when midway on the mount I
lay beside the ruined tower. I told her of the Knight that wore
upon his shield a burning brand and that for ten long years he wooed
the Lady of the Land. I told her how he pined and ah! the deep,
the low, the pleading tone with which I sang another's love interpreted
my own." |
